The University of Tokyo is the oldest university in Japan and has always been in the lead when it comes to facing new challenges. With its 10 departments,15 graduate schools, and 11 research institutes,it has been a guiding force in research and education in every field.
The University of Tokyo's record in developing important human resources for Japanese society is well known, but now, with the hundreds of exchange agreements made, the university has formed with overseas universities, and it is playing an important role in the international academic community as well. Specifically, the role it plays in various inter-university organizations within Asia has become increasingly important in recent years. More than 2000 international students, beyond 10 percent of the entire student body, are currently studying in the University's graduate schools.
The University of Tokyo became an independent corporation in April 2004. The real importance of this shift is that the university now has a new structure that will enable it to use its resources more efficiently than before. The important position that universities have in the development of social and economic fields in the 21st century is already well understood around the world. The expectations people now hold for universities and the increasingly strict standards against which they will be evaluated(评估) are simply two sides of the same coin. The University of Tokyo is well aware of the current environment and has begun to take the necessary steps to change itself into a new university for a new century.
